Get the Right Outside Input
When otherwise-effective people become stalled in some aspect of their personal or professional lives, the paralysis can sometimes be resolved by getting the right outside input. In Albert Einstein's words, "The significant problems we have cannot be solved at the same level of thinking with which we created them," certainly apply in this arena. My "Getting Unstuck" CoachingSM clients get traction from the re-frames and new perspectives I offer, the questions I ask, and exercises and resources I suggest.
I Can Help You Identify What's Really the Issue
While the key factors for getting unstuck have been different for every person I've ever coached, there are some common themes. See if any of these patterns strike a familiar chord for you.
Struggling to know what to do next?
Do you think you have to know the whole trajectory to your big goal before starting out? Some people believe that in order to make a change in their life, they first have to envision the entire journey. Not so! There are many personal development paths that unfold a step at a time. Like driving in a fog, you might only be able to see 20 feet ahead of you at a time. That's OK. Make the move you can make and trust that you'll survey the visible landscape from there and see where to go next. I can help you identify the next steps along the way and provide the structure and accountability to support you to stay in action.
Do you need a reality check to get out of your endless loop of second guessing yourself?
Since I started coaching in 1995, I have had many, many clients essentially say, "I have an excellent, enviable job at a good organization but I am longing to do (something different). Am I completely nuts to be seriously considering this?" Or, "Listen to what's happening among my colleagues at work, and tell me if I'm way off base to find it completely inappropriate."
Do you need help or information in order to get moving?
Some people expect themselves to know how to do something they don't actually have a clue how to do. I can sometimes provide the help that's needed, such as teaching you how to network for new business or joint ventures. Or I can help you figure out what kind of expertise you need and how to find it. And I'm happy to refer you to my expert resources: financial advisors, couples therapists, child development specialists, business consultants, and so forth.
Are limiting beliefs holding you back?
You may have a limiting belief that's holding you back. My job is to identify your limiting beliefs and gently offer you the opportunity to take a conscious look at them and evaluate whether you want to keep them or not. I've had people tell me their family could not live on one penny less than what they currently earn, when in fact it turned out later there was much more flexibility than they thought possible. I used to have a limiting belief that my work needed to be mind-breakingly hard, and my life got a lot better when I let go of that belief and started doing work that was much more natural to me.
Is it time to upgrade your decision-making process?
You may have a decision making process (or a decision not-making process) that's no longer serving you: time to upgrade your decision process! Your old pattern may lock you into black and white thinking when in fact the options in front of you are all shades of gray. You may be fearful of making a mistake, when a more constructive (and equally "accurate") approach may be to see the potential benefits and challenges that each choice would afford you and understand that there is no single right answer. Making a change like this is a process, and I can take you through it.
